Just want to make a post about Gini in the 6 role.

Now when the season started, I doubt that many of us would have been expecting him to not only start the first 3 games, but start them playing as a 6. Obviously he had played there on ocassions last season when we were short, but he has quietly impressed me.

Some games it doesn’t actually look like he’s offering anything (Brighton) his ball winning and retention is sublime for his previous positions and husband stature almost. What I think it shows is he’s a very smart player, often simply just putting his body between the opposition and the ball or picking the best possible option when being pressed and under pressure.

I also think while he is great defensively, when the pace of the games are a little slower I think he will struggle and that he doesn’t offer too much going forward. I almost feel as if the instructions Klopp must give him are “Keep the ball and win the ball” he never seems to look for a killer pass and would much rather pass to one of his partners in midfield or onto the flanks. Something Henderson has been slated for over the years, he was brilliant when given the licence to go forward more in the World Cup. Then Wijnaldum plays as an 8, or the most attacking midfielder, he never strops trying to to break the lines to create space or create an opportunity. Obviously you’re not going to get the licence to do that playoff as a 6 but I feel the runs he can make should mean that ocassionally he is allowed to break and one of his partners could cover him. It’s like watching a different player almost when he plays as a 6 compared to 8/ 10 but both I find very effective!

As mentioned I don’t think think he’ll start even every game, and certainly not as a number 6, and I’m quite looking forward to seeing Fabinho. I just feel in the fast paced games, where they may be a slight less physicality (City, Spurs) he would be the best option to play as a 6 and would allow us to dominate the ball in midfield.

RE the Ox
I just cannot understand why we're interested in him, Klopp seems to get a semi over any versatile player, even if they're not very good.
Myfirst question would be where would he play? He's not going to displace Mane/ Coutinho on the wing and I wouldn't want Couts dropping deeper if it means Ox is out wide.
And if he's not to be played on the wing the only place I can see for him is midfield (and if Couts were to drop deeper, we add another CM, Keita for instance) it'd be a midfield of Keita Hendo/ Can Coutinho. leaving out Lallana and Wijnaldum who both offer us more than what the Ox could, I just can't get my head around it. Anyone have any ideas?

Awful display, don't understand how you can go from controlling a game so much in the first half, to then throwing it away in the second, complacency at its finest. Lovren and Lucas were shocking in the second half, completely getting mixed up. Karius at fault for two goals, I'd expect him to save the second goal and then actually be able to hold the ball for the fourth, or atleast punch it away, the guy is no improvement on Mignolet.

I really can't see these Wijnaldum rumours being true, I really can't, unless Coutinho were to go but Ed001 has said recently that he isn't pushing for a move so fingers crossed.

We really don't need any more attacking players as I see it. I wouldn't mind personally if we were to offload Milner and Lallana but there really isn't any interest in the two at the moment, hopefully things may change however. According to some sources though he really rates the two for their work ethic, which I can't really argue with but you have to look beyond that and question what do they do for the team (granted Lallana wins the ball back high up the pitch in great positions), or can they be replaced quite easily.

I know we have offloaded quite a few already and I know that some more will be offloaded. I feel that we really need to be selling before we buy any more attacking players. The restriction to the youth would be pretty stupid too, with Ojo, Kent, Woodburn, Branagan all looking good, i think we should really look to trim the squad further and give the kids a chance with more game time, with the attacking talent youth wise we have at the club at the moment (the four above to name a few) I wouldn't look to sign replacements for both/ either Lallana Markovic.

Considering we won't be playing in Europe next year you can't imagine that a huge squad would be needed, which is what we have, so the links to Wijnaldum baffle me at the moment as there are no real murmurs of any attacking players leaving (first teamers) for us to push for this.

As Ed001 previously stated too Wijnaldum was dropped for Newcastle because he doesn't press, which is a key fundamental in Klopps game the rumours don't really add up. Although if we were to sign him to replace somebody, hopefully not Coutinho, I think if he showed good attitude and was willing to adapt his game to Klopps pressing, I would think he could even become a shrewd signing coming in from that left wing.

Moreno is an actual joke of a left back, that counter attack at the end, he doesn't even look up, just smashes through the ball as always, at times he seems as greedy as a centre forward, a ball across goal would have found Ibe for a simple tap in, and then don't even get me started on how much of a liability he is defensively, where even was he for their goal? Shocking.

Hi Ed, agree completely with the match review.

Re your comments on the midfield not moving into the space Moreno vacates or the lack of cover for him, I noticed this initially myself. I think Wijnaldum can expose us sometimes playing on the left as he often wanders in and out of games although can put in some great performances and came up with some important goals last year.
Something that I noticed watching Saturdays game was how good Milner was at covering his let back and the space vacated from forward runs, he was almost playing left back himself at some points when Robertson was getting forward. This could perhaps be with him doing th entirety of last season at left back, and I don't personally see him starting quality to start in midfield just thought it could be an effective switch for some games where the opposition can seriously punish us on the counter attack.
Another alternative would be playing Can on the left of midfield to help cover because he certainly has more defensive capabilities than Wijnaldum.
Wouldn't mind hearing your opinion on the matter Ed.

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - surely that is where the deepest lying midfielder should make himself useful by covering the space? Not Wijnaldum, who has been given freedom to roam.}
