Ref and VAR had a mare

How Taw got away with that tackle is criminal. Especially after watching the replay and considering how Alex Mac and Jones were sent off last season.

Nunez incident - first, why was no advantage played? Even then, sure since the whistle had gone, there is no pen. But the horror tackle from Pickford deserved a yellow at least. In the end, Nunez was booked for time wasting or diving? I have no idea what game they Reffing.

I like how Vincent Kompany was so forgiving towards Darren England when Diaz's perfectly legitimate goal was ruled out earlier this season, saying humans make mistakes, when it's less so when he was subjected to some questionable refereeing from the same man over the weekend

I like it too that as a player he felt that the PL had the best referees and he could have a laugh about human errors with the referees after a game. Guess now that he's no longer among the big boys, suddenly he is seeing a different side of refereeing, or lack of favouritism, that he used to enjoy.

We are all biased towards our own causes. But the sheer number of managers that have eaten their own words since criticising Klopp and Liverpool for our reactions post the farce of Spurs game has been quite laughable. The louder they were then, the more vehement their complaints are now.

Many fans are upset with the utd-city result and understandably so

But I have a few thoughts on this
- we can only count on ourselves! And at this moment, we need no favours from anyone as the title is fully in our hands as it's City's. The game this weekend is HUGE!
- let's do our part too and win against Utd when we face them later this season. It was a shocker that we didn't beat them the last time and we can't blame anyone apart from ourselves.
- I hope our fans calling for ETH's head is not part of the decision making process in their recruitment as I did love for him to stay another 10 years at least. He might just turn utd into regular relegation battlers.

Can't wait for the weekend to come soon enough. I think we are 19 games away from quadruple greatness and I have a sensing we may get there.

Back to posting after a short break

Some brief thoughts on the last game and our players

1) I though the ref was poor, we were on the receiving end on such pretty bad challenges and it went on unchecked for awhile. Right after Jota went off, another flying challenge came in on Bradley and I did fear the worst. On the reverse, he was quick to give Brentford free kicks after free kicks after they dived. And how VAR missed Jota being wrestled to the ground with the flight of the ball passing over them, I'll never know. Thumbs down for me on the ref's performance.

2) Kelleher has gotten better as he played more games. He looked out of sorts in the 4-3 against Fulham but has gotten much better since. Could have done better maybe with the last 2 goals he conceded (first on footwork against Burnley, the second in pushing the ball away from goal though that was a reaction save from close range, so maybe I'm harsh) . But his overall play in catching, closing down, distribution has been good. Did a wonderful Jerzy Duden off the line claw away too in the last game.

3) Bradley, the biggest compliment is perhaps he reminds of Daniel Agger when he broke through back then. Young lad, new to the league but playing like he's a veteran already. He doesn't look out of place at all and his defensive know how is really top notch for a young kid. All to that the goals and assists he already has, makes losing TAA not as painful.

4) Jones, he'll be a big big miss. His energy, pressing, some quality on the ball and goal contributions. Think we have to play midfield differently since he and Szoboszlai are both out and our other midfielder probably can't match their intensity.

5) Endo, having an enforcer makes such a big difference in our midfield. The freedom he gives to others to attack cannot be understated. He also has some good qualities on the ball too. Glad to have him back.

6) Gravenberch, thought that was probably the most combative display since he came. I recall at one point he won the ball or rode a challenge, move on to carry the ball well and made a good pass. If he adds this energy, bite and hunger to his game, and added on his on the ball quality, he will be very very good for us. Perhaps doing what Keita was supposed to but never quite?

7) Elliot, seems to be better coming off the bench but am really glad we have him. Always busy, some quality on the ball and has always made an impact coming on as sub. If Jones, Thiago and Szoboszlai are really out, he'll be so key moving ahead.

8) Nunez, great goal. I hope he's fine, as him being on the pitch alone changes the way opposition defend against us. And when they don't on set pieces, that is what happens.

9) Jota, his runs and goals will be missed! I personally felt his injury wasn't all accidental. So I'm somewhat livid at the player and ref for allowing so much to go unchecked.

10) Salah, welcome back and hope he's not injured at all! Looks fresh, fit and fired up.

11) Thomas Frank, thanks but no thanks. Don't like his football now, lacks defensive sense and not sure if he's any good at all in football tactics and management.

Hope we can somehow get through this period of injuries and claim our first silverware this weekend!

The new handball rule seems to be -
If you are moving your hand towards the ball as the defender, it's not handball
City did it against Everton some years back when BS intentionally moved his hand towards the ball and MO did it today

But it found it strange it was Chris Kavanga today that didn't give the decision
Years back, TAA slipped against Everton, he gave a pen, VAR called him back and he didn't give it as much as 0.1s look and stuck by the pen he awarded
In that game TAA was already on the floor, back facing the attacker and the attacker kicked the ball on to his hand, today, MO was facing the attacker and still had control over his hands. Yet today, he waved it away. strange.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this happened:

Tark didn't get read carded and went on to contribute to Jota's goal with his poor clearance

Since he isn't suspended, he does on to score the winning goal against Arsenal.

This post is about the uselessness of VAR with its current implementation

Pre-VAR, we could always debate about refereeing decisions and in many circumstances, you can give them benefit of a doubt that they didn't see it, interpreted it differently in real time, and here and there, there were apologies. Some you accept, some you sense bias or even corruption, but given that they only had one look and split seconds to decide, that was life. And we can talk about it all day or years long.

Then came VAR, with the promise to make better and correct decisions since they could have a second look, slow it down, multiple angles. It was the technology to eliminate human errors. But the refereeing became worse!

For a start, they started inventing new rules or explanation that no one has heard off, and typically only used in that once off incident and never again. And when some shocking decisions were made, the apologies started coming. Why should there be such apologies, especially over straight forward decisions, if the technology was intended to eliminate clear and obvious errors? I can accept that for some situations, even if video review it may not be clear and obvious. But now, they are apologising for not attending to clear and obvious errors - the very basis VAR purportedly exist for!

Likely won't happy, but if it did, maybe it'll change VAR for the better
1. Independent group to run it (and they did have no issue crossing the PGMOL)
2. If PGMOL continues running it, each time a VAR makes a mistake that requires apology, he will be suspended with no pay for a week. (Risk is they revert to inventing new rules again and no apologies issued)
3. VAR on score. If the VAR ref makes a mistake, points are deducted and once they fall below a baseline, they are out of VAR completely for the season.
4. Every VAR apology, PGMOL is fined. Collectively across the season if their VAR performance is poor, bonuses slashed.
5. Likewise, if VAR is poor, PL is fined as they allowed an inferior agency to spoil their product.
6. Fines go to charity, not to FA or anyone else.

These probably will never happen but I believe if it doesn't hurt PGMOL and the VAD refs, and other stakeholders, they'll never act.

All the talk about complacency, keeping grounding and waiting till it's mathematically impossible is all good and we should

But I'm certain Arsenal won't claw their way back because of 1 thing - mentality

Yes injuries certainly derailed them but I think their mentality will ultimately cost them

What was Declan Rice doing celebrating at the corner flag after equalising with them to spare?

In the year we won and those when we can so close, when we equalise late on, it's always grabbing the ball and rallying everyone to get back and get going. Press high, win the ball and attack again.

I saw none of that urgency from Arsenal and that tells me they aren't ready to be champions mentally.

We are a couple more hours to the game and I'm super nervous! Yes much more than the ucl game we just had against psg.

We are top, they are bottom
We are nailed on to win, they are nailed on to lose
We will need these 3 points to consolidate the top, they would remain in the bottom even if they won

Yet this is the type of game when Murphy may visit you!

So I'm hoping all these nerves are illusion and we get the job done today and the bottom half table team in Manchester rise to the occasion and do a giant killing tomorrow.

This is an Endo appreciation post

When he joined last season, he had much to prove. He was already 30, new to PL and was the after thought when we failed to land Caiceido and Lavia. He looked short on fitness when he started. Even some fans were not convinced about him. But he toiled, tackled and scored some in his first season.

This season, he didn't feature as much and is not deemed to be what Slot wants in a deep lying role it seems. But he always came on to do a job whenever called upon. I'm the game against City, he played like a false 4/ 6 and appeared as the extra man to track, block, tackle when danger was looking. Free floating attackers we have seen much, but a free floating CB / DM, it needs someone who reads the game well to execute it and he did.

Against Newcastle, he shut out their attacks with some many sliding tackles to repel the ball just when their move was gathering promise.

I do hope to see more of him in the final run in and believe he can strengthen our defence and see games out, especially close ones, let RB have a rest, and add needed bite into our midfield.

He may not be a superstar, but he sure is one effective samurai that's here to help us win big things.
