Comments i've on this site about possibly signing Rabiot (paraphrasing) :

1. I'd rather play Nyoni than sign Rabiot (that's a 17 year old with no senior starts)
2. Rabiot is a lazy lump
3. Rabiot is lucky he's had his career
4. Rabiot is slow and runs in circles
5. PSG and Juventus won all their trophies in spite of Rabiot
6. All 7 of Rabiot's managers that continuously picked him were over rated failures
7. If Rabiot signs it's a panic buy (even though our interest goes back 12 months)
8. If Rabiot signs we won't finish top 4
9. If Rabiot signs, Hughes should be sacked immediately
10. Rabiot is a bang average footballer who contributes nothing to his teams success
11. My Grandmother is better than Rabiot
12. Anybody could be successful next to Kante so Rabiot's international achievements mean nothing
13. Rabiot is the reason Juventus collapsed
14. We shouldn't sign Rabiot because of his mum
15. If we sign Rabiot I will kill myself

Do I even need to say anything after that last one? I'm seriously disturbed by the level of anger and hatred being directed at Rabiot on a daily basis. I've changed my mind. I don't want us to sign Rabiot anymore. I'd actually be concerned for his safety because this is not normal.

I'm out of this debate. Fire away.

Arne Slot on LFC improving once Nyoni came in:
"It started with a player who came on [Nyoni] who speeded up the game for us a lot, he found these players in between the lines a lot of times, that's the quality we needed in those 6 positions. "
"I mentioned yesterday young players impressed me, if you see him come on after 30 minutes for Curtis you could expect that I meant him [Nyoni]. "

For anyone who didn't get to watch the game, Slot deployed a very unorthodox 4-4-2 / 4-2-4. Elliott and Szoboszlai started as two false 9's, Salah RW, Carvalho LW with Jones and Endo in a double pivot of two 6's. Jones went off injured and Nyoni came on and changed the game for us. Absolutely superb. Only just turned 17 as well but if you are good enough, you are old enough. He definitely needs an Endo type next to him though. I said down below that Nyoni reminded me of Fabregas and we saw how effective he can be with a player like Matic or Kante next to him, back when he was winning league titles at Chelsea.

To clarify as well, Slot also said we will use a number 9 in future, but this was the best solution as we didn't have any in the squad. So I think we can put to bed any ideas Salah might be repurposed this season. Salah was also excellent on the RW btw. The link up between him, Szoboszlai and Bradley was excellent and that's what created Szoboszlai's winning goal.

Endo really struggled. I like him and I've defended him here, but the pace of the passing looked to be beyond him if I'm brutally honest. Carvalho, Jones and Elliott weren't at their best either. Kids who came on throughout the 2nd half all impressed to varying levels but none stood out other than Jaros who bailed the team out 3 times from poor defending and bad back passes.

There's been a lot of talk on here about Trent's positioning and I think both sides made some really good points (permanent midfield vs inverted full back) .

I think what's clear is Robertson sitting back more has allowed Trent to move into midfield earlier in our attacking transition. Whereas before Trent wouldn't usually drift inside until we had sustained possession the final 3rd, he is now drifting central as soon as we hold possession anywhere on the pitch.

My thoughts on this first and foremost is it has improved our capabilities playing out from the back. Previously this season it was quite easy to press our backline and cut off the out ball through the lines into midfield. That midfield overload as well as Robbo not running too far away, now means Trent is finding space in between the opposition midfield and attack almost every time. Nottingham Forest were the only team who managed to press us anything like effectively since this subtle tactical tweak. Even they couldn't sustain it beyond the hour mark though.

Defensively it's also made us more solid (at least in one way) . Whereas previously Trent and Robbo would both bomb forwards a leave Virgil/ Konate behind with just Fabinho to shield them, we're now seeing Robbo also left behind but with Fabinho and Trent to shield them. There's simply more cover. However, it would be remiss to not acknowledge that it has made us more fragile in another way. The change mid-season has clearly left especially Robbo and Konate confused. When we transition to the back 3 they're not quite getting their positioning right, but also they are both quite rash at times in terms of charging out to make a 50/ 50 challenge and then leaving a huge hole behind them. We saw this flaw brutally exposed against Spurs in particular. However it is a flaw that can arguably be worked on this summer. Whether that means replacing Robbo with a centre back in the bigger games or by simply coaching Robbo himself, who knows. But it's not something that can't be fixed in my opinion. Konate is still young and can learn.

Lastly we have to discuss the offensive improvement. On paper we should be weaker going forward without the width of Robbo and Trent (which has been a defining factor of this Klopp team for over 4 years) . However Trents vision in central areas has meant that just isn't the case. People will rightly talk about his assists he's racked up since the tactical tweak, but we should also show some appreciation for the passes he's fizzing in between the lines, primarily to Gakpo. He's taking the entire opposition midfield out the game on a regular basis and that is pegging teams back until they're so deep they can't get out. Having Trent and Robbo deeper has also given a new lease of life to Hendo and Jones. They are getting forward with far more purpose and are able to press more aggressively, safe in the knowledge there are enough players behind them to cover if the press is broken.

Overall, it's hard not to appreciate the advantages to this new role Trent and Robbo in particular, find themselves in. I think it is far from perfect right now and we've seen fragility in the Spurs and Forest games. But let's also remember we did actually win both of those games anyway because the sheer determinition and attacking overload was just too much in the end for both teams. I don't actually mind if we stick with this system or if we just fully convert Trent into a midfielder and find a new right back. I think both arguments were convincing. Trent will get more space as an inverted full back but Robertson will be able to get forward again if we go back to our old system. There really are pros a cons to both. Ultimately we all agree that we have to keep Trent in those central areas at least when we have possession. The risk is quite simply worth the reward.

Not Liverpool related. More football in general. Firstly, I hope Wesley Fofana makes a speedy recovery. Broken leg and dislocated ankle in a friendly! What a disgraceful tackle from that Fernando Nino bloke. He was blatantly taking it out on an opponent because his team were 3-0 down. He won't even get a ban with it being a friendly. Reminds me of when Larouci got crippled in pre-season by atrocious behaviour.

Not enough is done to protect players on the pitch from serious foul play, in my opinion. Stronger deterrents are needed. It's not my job to decide what that is, but when the maximum punishment is 3 games for ending someone's season/ career, you know it's no more than lip service. Sure Fofana will get an apology on Twitter though. That'll mean the world to him i'm sure 🙄.

Now the dust has settled, I genuinely think our squad is stronger than it was last season. When you look at the players who've left the first team squad and the ones who've stepped in, in their place, it's actually harder to argue otherwise is it not? We've simply utilised the academy and loan system to improve the squad in some positions, rather than the transfer market. All the talk of a CB seems moot, when Matip was literally replaced internally last season, and nobody else left.

Jaros > Adrian (0 minutes)
Quansah > an injured Matip (1000 minutes)
Morton > an injured Thiago (5 minutes)
Nyoni > an injured Bajcetic (100 minutes)
Chiesa > an injured Doak (200 minutes)

We've replaced 5 players who offered nowhere near enough on the pitch last season, with 5 players who are raring to go. A bad transfer window, for me, would've been losing key players and not replacing them (Virgil, Trent, Alisson, Salah etc) . We kept everyone we wanted to keep though and added a winger who was valued at €100m back when he had 3 years on his contract.

All of last season after draws and defeats it was almost always the same complaints; we didn't take our chances, we should've been well ahead before they even scored, we didn't put the game to bed etc. The club have acted and added another top class forward option to help combat that profligacy in front of goal, whilst keeping the rest of the core squad intact.

The slight concern would be that Adrian, Matip and Thiago were big characters in the dressing room, even if they barely played. So hopefully some of the younger leaders in the squad can come forward and really show their character now. I'm still not losing sleep over losing a 38 year old 3rd keeper and 4 players who were sat on the treatment table last season, 2 of which are only on loan anyway.

I get that we could've been more ruthless and maybe upgraded Gomez and Endo (I even advocated for exactly that myself) but let's still treat those 2 guys with some respect and not mope at the fact they're still here instead of new faces. They've chosen to stay and fight for their Liverpool careers. They're extremely humble guys who don't shy away from adversity and will give 100% when on the pitch. Do I think they're good enough long term? Honestly no, but I'm open to them proving me wrong. They wouldn't be the first to do so and they certainly won't be the last. When the window shuts, what you have is what you have. So it's time to get behind great servants like those 2 lads and stop bemoaning that we didn't bomb them out for new players who could've actually ended up being worse given the shoddy business some of our rivals have done.

Let the Arne Era begin!

Chiesa's first interview is impossible to read without smiling. The guy is absolutely buzzing to be signing for us. His Dad and his missus both literally said "go" as soon as he said 'Liverpool' to them. He even got his missus to play YNWA as they were coming in to land ?

Also, really impressed by his English, it's absolutely perfect so that should really help him to settle quickly. I'm just absolutely ecstatic about this one. I think it'll turn out to be the best signing we've made since the summer when we signed Alisson and Fabinho. Let's go get that silverware!

Here's a bit of Trivia for you all. Some letters are very rare in football. For example Xavier and Quansah are the only players to play for Liverpool with an X and a Q at the start of their surname. There's only 2 with the letter U (Underwood and Uren) and there's only 3 with the letter Y (Younger, Yeats and Yesil) .

With Zubimendi on the brink of possibly joining this fine establishment, who can name me the only other 2 players in History to play for Liverpool with a Z at the very start of their surname? (So for example, you can't say El Zhar, Diaz, Szoboszlai, Suarez etc)

Panic seems to be starting to set in amongst a minority of fans. I don't think this quiet start to the window is surprising though. We've changed the whole back room at the club pretty much. Slot, Hulshoff, Hughes and co will all want to run the rule over what they have already.

Players like Carvalho, van den Berg, Beck, Morton, Jaros, Chambers etc might not have been high on the list for Klopp and Lijnders, but the new leadership team might have other ideas. They might suit the way we plan to play next year even if they didn't suit what the previous regime wanted or weren't deemed ready at that time.

Not to mention the 30-40 odd players Klopp actually used last season at some point across all competitions need to be assessed. Young lads like Elliott, Quansah, Bradley, Danns, Clark, Bajcetic, Scanlon, Nyoni, McConnell, Koumas, Gordon, Doak etc might have bigger parts to play now they're a year older and again, a new coaching team is assessing them.

I really don't see the need to start turning on FSG (who are unrelated entirely) or even questioning the new management team this early in the window. There's a month until our first game so I'd say we just need to be patient.
