For anyone interested in the history of Liverpool's transfers between 2012 and 2023 from an insider's perspective, Ian Graham's (Director of Research between those years) book ("How to Win the Premier League") is truly fascinating: it contains a wealth of explanations and anecdotes.
For example, Andy Robertson was the third option on a list of five for the left-back position (behind Benjamin Mendy and Emerson Palmieri) . Mendy signed for City, we couldn't compete with them in terms of salary, and Emerson Palmieri suffered an ACL injury. Robertson was seen, according to the data, as an average Premier League player: his attacking qualities were above average, but there were doubts about his defensive abilities. As we know, he exceeded expectations to become one of the best of his generation. There are explanations for a lot of other transfers :Salah (who was wanted by the data team, video analysts and scouts but Klopp wanted Julian Brandt. He finally followed the recommendations and Salah scored 32 goals in his first year in the PL)
, Coutinho, Matip .
